Basic Procedure for notching

The basic procedure for notching will depend on whether or not a ‘centerline’ between two tubes can be measured.

1) Notching a tube where a centerline distance can be determined between two existing tubes:"

Measure centerline distance between two existing tubes, regardless if they are parallel or divergent and record the acute angle at both ends A and B.

Calculate the overall finished length using our ‘EasyNotch’ software.  (The software will also calculate where to start the notch at each end.) Cut the work piece to exact length as calculated.

Set notcher to correct angle and notch end ‘A’ at calculated start point.  Flip the tube around  and place the other end into the notcher.  Be sure that the tube is ‘clocked’ correctly.  Our handy Snap-Collar locators can help with this by referencing centerline.  Notch end ‘B’ at calculated start point.

2) Notching a tube where there is no reference to the other end:

Lay up and temporarily secure a tube so both centerline and the point of intersection can be located.  It is important that you position yourself so that you are viewing from a right angle perspective.  Mark these locations with a felt pen.  Using our handy SnapCollar locators can also be a big help in marking the intersecting point.  They slide into position for accurate marking and if the tube has to be rotated for positioning into the notcher these snap-collars make for an easy reference.  Record the angle using a protractor.

Use our ‘EasyNotch’ software to calculate where to trim the tube from beyond the point of intersection.  Cut the work piece.

Set the notcher angle and clamp the tube in place positioned correctly.  Centerline mark should be at the very top (or bottom in some cases), which is 90º to the center of the holesaw.   And the edge of the holesaw should be in line with the intersection mark.  Slide or remove the snap-collar out of harm’s way and make the notch.
